How is rhinoplasty performed?

What is open rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty is performed by making a small incision between the nostrils in the lower part of the nostril. This allows the doctor to easily reach the structure of the nose and give it the desired shape. The doctor hides the wound with natural lines to make it almost invisible.

Aesthetics of the tip of the nose

This operation differs from the other techniques and consists of reforming the nose without damaging the structures of the nasal tip. This technique may use either the closed or open rhinoplasty.

What should I do before the operation?

Diet

A healthy and balanced diet before surgery will speed the recovery and reduce the risk of infection. Patients are recommended to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein.

Medicaments

Some medications can cause complications before or after the surgery. Patients should inform the surgeon of all medications they are taking when preparing for rhinoplasty surgery. The surgeon may temporarily stop the use of a drug or offer a different alternative.

You must stop smoking

The consumption of tobacco slows down the blood flow. Smokers may face infection and negative scarring. The slow access of oxygen to the incision area may prolong the healing process. It is recommended to stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the surgery.

Steps in the surgical process

The are several stages of rhinoplasty, which will last for overall 1-2 hours, depending on the patient's condition and the method used by the doctor.

Anesthesia

Although rhinoplasty techniques differ from person to person, general anesthesia can be applied depending on the type of the operation for patient’s comfort.

Intravenous sedation

The surgeon numbs the area of the face with local anesthesia and applies a strong intravenous sedative. When the medicine starts to lose its effect, the patient becomes slightly drowsy and does not remember the surgery. The surgeon determines the right anesthesia for their patient.

Surgical operation

Once the doctor has applied the appropriate anesthesia, the surgery starts.

Buffer

In the first days after nose surgery, the nasal tissue should be protected with precision. After the incisions are cut, a splint is placed for protection and a tampon is applied to the nose.

What can I expect after the operation?

You may experience slight pain after rhinoplasty. This pain can be easily controlled with medication, and it will gradually decrease within 72 hours after surgery.

What should I do after the surgery?

After rhinoplasty, the splint band that supports the nose and protects it from damage will be removed within the first week after the rhinoplasty. The surgeon prescribes painkillers to the patient to reduce discomfort during recovery.

The patient can resume the normal life several weeks after the rhinoplasty.

You can undergo rhinoplasty, like any other cosmetic procedure, in any season. However, it is not recommended during the hot summer months, as you should avoid the sun to reduce swelling. Fall is the most suitable season for nose surgeries and other plastic surgeries.

Will an incision be made on my nose for nose surgery?

In the case of closed rhinoplasty there will be no incision and hence, no scarring. However, in the case of open rhinoplasty, there will be a suture mark left between two nostril, which will fade away with time.
