Surgical Tooth Extraction

Surgical tooth extraction consists of surgical steps in addition to the routine procedure. During the surgical extraction, the dentist makes an incision in a part of the gum tissue.

What is surgical tooth extraction?

When a tooth is visible above the gum line and the dentist can easily extract it with forceps, the procedure is a straightforward extraction. However, if a more unstable tooth has not yet grown, the dentist must remove tissue or gum bone to extract it. This is then a surgical extraction.

By taking an x-ray and examining the tooth, the dentist can usually determine whether the extraction will be simple or surgical.

Wisdom teeth often need to be surgically removed as they are usually impacted, meaning they have not fully emerged. This condition requires cutting bone and tissue. Extractions of severely broken teeth, pieces of root, or teeth with long, curved roots are other examples of surgical extraction. Sometimes, too, the bone surrounding a tooth has become dense and requires surgical treatment.

After the surgical extraction, it is very likely that the dentist will make one or more stitches at the extraction site. It is always important to follow the dentist's postoperative instructions to speed up healing and avoid complications. Here are some key recommendations; Absolutely avoid mouthwashes on the day of the operation and until the next morning, do not eat before the local anesthesia has ceased to take effect, never apply hot compresses to the operated area, do not suck or aspirate the wound or spit, eat warm or cold the first two days after the operation, Avoid smoking, do not lie down with your head down, hydrogen peroxide in mouthwash, even diluted, must be avoided and finally do not take aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory drug, as these substances promote bleeding.

Surgical tooth extraction might sound a little scary, but with modern procedures and anesthesia, you have nothing to worry about.

Thereafter, you can discuss the dental prosthesis options with your dentist in order to find the function of the missing tooth (s) and the aesthetics of your smile.

The procedure is usually short-lived, less than 30 minutes for the extraction of the four wisdom teeth. A one-hour appointment is scheduled, including local anesthesia, procedure, and time to review post-operative advice.

TREATMENT TIME: The average surgical tooth extraction lasts between 30 and 120 minutes.
